Great Barrier Island doesn’t do big-city event schedules. What it does have is a tight calendar of events that feel genuinely local — run by people who live here, attended by people who love the place, and set against a landscape that makes even a pub quiz feel like something worth making the trip for.

This post is updated regularly. For the full official calendar, greatbarrier.co.nz/events is the most up-to-date source.

Upcoming Events

Stargazing with Good Heavens

19 April 2026 — 7:30pm to 9:00pm Medlands Beach, Oruawharo Bay

Aotea Great Barrier Island is one of a handful of places on Earth designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary. Good Heavens runs guided stargazing evenings from Medlands Beach — no telescope required, just a clear night and a willingness to look up. Sessions run approximately 90 minutes and cover the Milky Way, southern constellations, and whatever planets are visible that evening. A genuinely memorable way to spend an evening on the island.

Tickets: $65–$130 | Book via greatbarrier.co.nz/event/stargazing-with-good-heavens

Wharf to Wharf Marathon & Fun Run

3 October 2026 Starting at Kaitoke School

One of the island’s signature annual events. Athletes walk, run, or cycle across the island from one wharf to the other — taking in beach, bush, ridgeline, and everything in between. The full marathon-length route is a serious undertaking; the fun run option makes it accessible for most fitness levels. When it’s on, the whole island turns out. If you’re planning a late-season trip to the island, this is worth building your dates around.

Annual Events (Dates TBC for 2026)

Great Barrier Island Garden Tour

November — exact date TBC

A unique opportunity to visit a collection of private residential gardens across the island. Great Barrier’s relative isolation and subtropical climate have produced some extraordinary gardens — coastal hideaways, cottage gardens, native plantings — that most visitors never see. The tour includes transport between properties, morning tea, and a Devonshire afternoon tea.

Genuinely surprising if you haven’t done it before. Check gbigardentour.nz for 2026 dates when announced.

FitzRoy Mussel Fest

Annual — exact date TBC

Port Fitzroy’s annual celebration of the mussels the harbour is known for. Good food, cold drinks, local crowd, and the kind of relaxed waterside atmosphere that makes you wish you’d stayed longer. Dates announced closer to the event — check greatbarrier.co.nz/events for updates.

Weekly & Regular Events

The Currach Irish Pub — Quiz Night & Open Mic

Every Sunday: Quiz Night Every Thursday from 8pm: Open Mic / Jam Night Tryphena, ~25 minutes south of Medlands

The Currach is the social hub of the island’s visitor scene — live music, cold Guinness, and the kind of pub where you end up in conversation with a local until closing time. The Sunday quiz and Thursday open mic nights are genuine island institutions. Live music schedule at currachirishpub.co.nz.

Aotea Brewing — Open Thu–Sun

Thursday to Sunday, 12–6pm Mason Road Hub, Medlands Beach

Not a ticketed event, but worth knowing: Aotea Brewing opens Thursday through Sunday through the summer season. A solar-powered craft brewery in a converted shipping container on a farm paddock, five minutes’ walk from Medlands Beach. Bring a flagon or buy one and fill it from the keg. If you’re planning a group visit or want to arrange something outside regular hours, they take bookings direct — aoteabrewing.co.nz.

Plan Around the Calendar

Most events on Great Barrier Island sell out or fill up well in advance — the island’s accommodation capacity is limited and word travels fast among repeat visitors. If you’re planning a trip around a specific event, book your accommodation early.
